As a Mechanical Engineer on Natel Energy's Turbine team, you will play a key role in the development and manufacturing of Natel’s family of low head fish safe hydro turbine products. Our organization requires a skilled and detail oriented individual who is excited to bring their technical communication, design, and process skills to bear on modern renewable energy hydro turbine equipment. This position will report to Natel’s VP of Engineering.

If this sounds like you, we encourage you to apply to this opportunity! Your role will cover the following areas of responsibility:
Structural design: You will work with the engineering and supply chain teams to move preliminary and detailed designs forward, with a focus specifically on Natel’s unique RHT runner (propeller) and related components. You will evaluate new concepts and turbine designs; detail components and assemblies using a mix of materials and processes; conduct and document analyses and tolerance stackups; design fixtures, tools and test equipment; review others’ work, both internal and external; and collaborate in manufacturing, assembly, testing, validation, and operational efforts.
Manufacturing: You will collaborate with vendors and fabricators and use your knowledge of technical communication and manufacturing methods to develop and optimize drawings, manufacturing process plans, and QA processes, propelling designs from prototypes to volume production.
Full product lifecycle: You will focus on the delivery of long-life components and continual improvement of designs and processes by evaluating test articles, production first articles, and existing + future fielded units.
To succeed in this role, you will have:
A degree in Mechanical Engineering or similar
An organized and analytical approach to problem solving
Extensive 3D CAD modeling experience, including surfacing
Experience in conducting well-documented structural / mechanical analyses
Experience with structural FEA
Strong written and verbal communication skills - comfortable receiving as well as providing guidance and technical material from/to engineers, designers, technicians, and suppliers
An interest in applying a range of manufacturing techniques and materials to produce critical hydro turbine components
Confidence in working independently to drive a project forward
The following specific skillsets are pluses:
At least 5 years in a similar role
Specific experience with Siemens NX and NX Nastran
Experience with PLM tools, preferably Siemens Teamcenter
Experience with master modeling
Experience with composites design, analysis, and manufacturing
Familiarity with a range of FEA techniques including 1D / connection elements, 2D and laminate modeling, mixing element types; and assessing a variety of failure modes
Hands-on experience with relevant processes (machining, fabrication, composite layup, inspection, assembly, etc) whether professionally or personally
Endorsements or certifications in applicable skill areas
A well-versed understanding of ASME Y14.5 GD&T
Alameda, California. This position requires onsite presence at our office in Alameda, CA.
Travel. <10%, as needed to provide support at our operating projects.
